Grandma's Best Butter Crumble Date Bars

Rich and comforting old fashioned dessert recipe

Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 9x13 pan greased
  • measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients
  

Date Filling

  • 2 C chopped and pitted dates
  • 3/4 C water
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 TBSP lemon juice
  • 1/2 C chopped nuts pecans or walnuts, optional

Butter Crumble Crust

  • 1 3/4 C raw uncooked oatmeal
  • 1 1/2 C flour
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 C chopped nuts pecans or walnuts, optional
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 C salted butter chilled

Instructions
 

Date Filling

  • Cook dates in water until soft
  • Add granulated sugar, salt, and lemon juice
  • Cook and stir until thickened
  • Add chopped nuts, cool

Butter Crumble Crust

  • Mix oatmeal, flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in large mixing bowl
  • Cut in chilled butter
  • Mix with pastry cutter and/or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs
  • Press half the crumble mixture into greased 9x13 glass baking pan
  • Drop filling in spoonfuls evenly distributed over unbaked crumble, spread gently
  • Top with remaining crumble mixture
  • Bake at 375F for 35 minutes (depending on oven)
